Designing with Video

This book illustrates in detail how digital video can be utilized throughout a design process, from the early user studies, through making sense of the video content and envisioning the future with video scenarios, to provoking change with video artifacts. The text offers first-hand case studies in both academic and industrial contexts, and is complemented by video excerpts. It is a must-read for those wishing to create value through insightful design.

Philips Hue App Expands to iPad, Gains New 3D Touch Features - Mac Rumors

Philips today updated its Hue app, used to control its line of Philips Hue lights, to version 2. 6. The update adds long-awaited support for the iPad, allowing iPad users to access their lights from an iPad-optimized app for the first time. The iPad version of the Philips Hue app features the same general design and controls that were introduced when Philips revamped the Hue app back in April. For iPhone users with a 3D Touch -enabled device, the new version of the app also adds improved iOS 10 support and new 3D Touch options. When you press on the Hue app icon, you'll now get access to the Widget options you've established in the app. Scene editing has been improved, making it possible to edit custom scenes with and without a picture, and the update includes bug fixes and stability improvements. I fail to see the excitement in controlling a light bulb with a phone. Surely a switch is more convenient. Not when you're controlling a dozen lights to set the mood for a particular activity with one tap or one Siri voice request. That is something far less convenient and limited with traditional lights and switches. The living and dining room lights dim to blues and reds, spotlights over the dining table turn on with a well lit and satisfying colour temperature, and lights in the kids rooms flash on/off to let them know that it's time to come down to eat. With smart lights, you stop thinking about controlling individual lights and begin thinking about controlling activity scenes involving many lights and other smart home devices. All the lights turn off, motion sensors activitated to turn on floor lighting strips when someone gets up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, thermostat cools the home, tv's turn off, smart locks ensure the house is locked down, the... I fail to see the excitement in controlling a light bulb with a phone. Surely a switch is more convenient. It's not necessarily exciting per se, not that physically turning off a switch is more demanding, but to be able to control your lights throughout your house is fairly convenient. I potentially could be upstairs in my house and forget to turn off the lights downstairs, hence having the ability to use my mobile device to control this. Technology allows us to have convenience where we may not necessarily need it, but it's exactly that, a short cut or convenient factor. Also, perhaps this would suit someone who has a physical disability in their household, where they could control the lights without having to maneuver up and down the stairs. Appreciate the iPad support but given Hue's premium price the app should offer a lot more customization than it does -- far less than the 3rd party apps. But I just paid $200+ for a set of fricken light bulbs. Why do I need to pay another $5 to be able to use them to there full capabilities, many which are noted on the package box. Love Hue but wish it came with an app worth of the system. As you might have guessed, I don't use the Hue app for my lights. The Home app is so much more intuitively organized and simple and of course it works with all of my devices, not just the lights. Please can I have your house when you've finished with it. . ). Can you use the Home app to set up fade in times. I can set that in the Hue app but can't see it in the Home app. Do NOT download this app onto your iPad if you already have it running on your iPhone. I started to create a new widget on the iPad and after setting up the 2nd item suddenly the same scene had been duplicated several times. The screwed up settings propagated back to my iPhone and probably they are totally wrecked on the Bridge as well. UPDATE: after mucking about it seems at least 4 scenes were corrupted and all assigned one name and a different image/color scheme. Deleting one crashed the app but seems to have cleared them from Bridge. Also the dashboard widget used to show two lines of items (8), now it only shows 4 with the next row revealing only the tops of the icons. This app update is a DISASTER. Up until now I was generally liking how Philips was trying to improve the color handling in the app, and finally restoring the ability to edit colors in scenes in the last.

  1. All the lights turn off, motion sensors activitated to turn on floor lighting strips when someone gets up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, thermostat cools the home, tv's turn off, smart locks ensure the house is locked down, the garage
  2. With so much investment activity in the area, and interior design that's both lively and smart, it's no wonder this pint-sized but practical condo at downtown
  3. It has a motion detection range of about 5 meters, or 16.5 feet, so whenever anyone walks near it, lights turn on. While you could set the motion sensor just to control, say, your bathroom lights so you don't have to fumble for a switch in the middle

A Thin 7 year old
Unless I knew the history of this photo, I would not have been able to pick myself out had it been a class photograph. Age 7. Height approx 4'3". Weight approx 4 stone. (26 Kg) Condition Thin. My rather thin tall build was an advantage at the infants school, I was able to out run most of my own group. There was one disadvantage, when some of the older junior boys were in trouble and received the cane, I was given it too, the Headmistress thought that I was also in the juniors, I can understand her thoughts, I don't look like a child that should be in the infant class. Well a school record for the only infant for many years to have been caned. I think during the school holidays without school lunches I lost some weight, thus the rather thin look to my face. Six months later I was put into a Children's Home and started to put on some more weight. In 1964 most boys would have had school shorts that almost reached their knees, my shorts had to be for a much younger age group...
Edmondson residence - Mildred Street, Warrawee, Sydney, NSW - 1965
Architect: Terry Edmondson "The best houses belong to their surroundings. Design and site are as one – one doesn’t impose on, or dominate, the other. Everything makes complete sense. And so it is with a house that architect Terry Edmondson designed for his own family in 1965. Edmondson liked the idea of the house “hugging the ground, fitting into the slope of the land”, and excavated two separate levels to achieve that. It’s always bothered him, he says, that houses face the street “and put important things on street side no matter what the orientation is”. In this case, the block faces south west, which Edmondson saw as an opportunity – at a time when few were thinking of such things – he designed the house to turn its back to the street, keeping out hot summer sun and westerly winds, and remaining completely private. From the garden side, though, there’s a lovely openness to it with its banks of windows, and yet it’s a design (made up of the original sixties house with a...
