On March 10, 1948, an FJ-1 Fury fighter landed aboard the carrier Boxer. The U.S. Navy had officially entered the jet age. Built by North American, the Fury shared a prototype with the Air Force¿s F-86 Sabre. When the FJ-1¿s straight wing design proved less than satisfactory, North American provided the Navy with enhanced F-86Es. Designated the FJ-2, the plane flew primarily with the U.S. Marine Corps. An enhanced version, the FJ-3, debuted in 1953 and was deployed in late 1954. The plane served in a variety of duties, including as control aircraft for the Navy¿s Regulus nuclear cruise missile. The Fury remained with the fleet into the early 1960¿s. Over 1,100 were produced. This pilot¿s flight operating handbook was originally produced by the U.S. Navy. It has been slightly reformatted...
The inner circle was in the Bob McDonnell business, anticipating bigger things as Virginia's 71st governor became a national figure and a prospect for vice presidential consideration. What happens when that business goes bust. You pull together, former key staffers said. Here's a look at some key members of McDonnell's political family and what's become of them in the two years since the August 2014 trial. Janet Kelly was Bob McDonnell's Secretary of the Commonwealth. She worked with the governor for 15 years, going back to his days as a Republican delegate from Virginia Beach. McDonnell's trial is a marker for her, a dividing line between two lives. But the changes that put her right where she's supposed to be started years before. Kelly had just snagged breakfast at Chick-fil-A when she met a young woman in a parking lot. She asked to used Kelly's phone. "She said I'm headed to Planned Parenthood and I can't get there," Kelly remembered. Fiercely pro-life, there was no way Kelly could help with that, though the young woman would reveal she just needed a pregnancy test for now. But Kelly could talk. She'd be late for her next appointment, with the governor. "This woman really just gave me my education about poverty," Kelly said. Kelly wound up adopting this woman's son. The day after that was finalized, Kelly discovered she was pregnant herself. Her National Guardsman husband was on duty and it was board season, when the Secretary of the Commonwealth is busy making dozens upon dozens of appointments. "Lowest point in my life," Kelly said. The young woman Kelly helped got better, then worse, then better again and had another child. Kelly worked with McDonnell on an adoption program that would end up pairing 1,000 children with new families. "If I hadn't worked for Bob McDonnell. I never would have stopped and listened to that woman on the sidewalk," Kelly said earlier this month, tears in her eyes. And then the scandal broke. McDonnell and his family had taken six-figures' worth of gifts and loans from a shady Virginia businessman named Jonnie Williams. For the last year of McDonnell's administration, that was all anyone wanted to ask about. "I don't feel any bitterness and anger toward anybody," Kelly said. Not directed at McDonnell, though. Asked if she feels any anger toward him, Kelly replied, "None. Now Kelly is working to export "Virginia Adopts" to every other state through a group called America's Kids Belong. She used connections from the McDonnell campaign to get things off the ground, including Phil Cox, the governor's campaign manager in 2009 who went on to become head of the Republican Governors Association. If the trial had never happened, Kelly would still have both feet in the political world, she said, "making more money than I need, working too much and not investing in others the way I am now. "God works the ugly messy things out for good," she said. "That's been one of the most gratifying parts of this, is knowing throughout that process that it was going to be OK. We all knew we were going to be OK, even the governor. We just didn't know what it was going to look like from A to B. ". The spokesman. Tucker Martin was a single guy with a dog, burning the candle at both ends as Bob McDonnell's communications director. "And now I have two kids under 18 months, married to an incredible woman and I'm happier than I've ever been," he said. "I think I have balance in my life. Martin was on his honeymoon, in Africa, when the scandal broke over Easter weekend in 2013. "In 2013 and 2014 it all felt so raw and intense," he said. "And now it's been going on so long that you just feel – you can't help feeling a little tired. Most everyone from that administration is doing well professionally. The governor — they all keep in touch — has found his own peace, and an 8-0 Supreme Court decision left it very likely that he'll avoid jail time. Martin is in business for himself as a communications consultant. He worked for a pro-Chris Christie PAC during the GOP primary cycle. Now his most vocal role in the presidential race is hating how Donald Trump has subsumed the Republican Party, and waiting to rebuild it after this election. "If I had my druthers, none of this happens, Bob McDonnell runs for.
