So at the beginning of the year, I mentioned that maybe I would get my DPV (Underwater Scooter) certification. I started discussing the possibility with a dive buddy and we decided that we really wanted to give it a go. So now I had to get my scooters up and running. I say scooters, as in plural, because at the time I had two, and neither was operational. Fortunately, one was an easy fix. The battery had ‘sploded last year. ” explosion, but the cover had popped off and was releasing the “magic blue smoke. ” As anyone remotely familiar with electronics can tell you, electronics don’t run on electricity, they run on the magic blue smoke. Now I wanted the biggest battery I could get inside the scooter and still get the cover closed and sealed. No problem, a 12V 30Ah deep cycle fit the bill. Crimp on some connectors and I’m ready to go. Next up was the eBay listed “Parts only” Sea Doo Seascooter. I had opened it up some time ago, and pulled everything apart. The control module was shot so I tossed that. In hind sight I should have kept it to compare to replacement boards. When I had started this project, about 3 years ago, it was at the top of my to-do list. But as time wore on and I had trouble sourcing the control board, it was relegated to the back corner of my shop. So, when I pulled it out of the bag last month, it was a loose collection of parts caked in sawdust. Sawdust and watertight seals, not a good combo. First order of business is to get everything cleaned up. Pull out any remaining electronics and give the plastic a good scrub. This time I took photos of the disassembly. Once everything was cleaned up, time to start testing components and putting it all back together. Jumpered the batter to the motor terminals and it spun to life. So that works, give it a quick clean and grease and mount that back in the tail section. With the motor back in place, and the buzzer working properly, I can close up the tail section and re-install the prop and guards. This thing is starting to look like a scooter again… Except where do these parts go. Ah well, they can’t be * that * important. Now for that dang control board. A quick google search turned up a part distributer and I ordered the one for my model. Two weeks later I had the control board and IT DIDN’T FIT. So I go back online and get the board that I think is correct for my scooter and two weeks later it fits. Get all the connections hooked up and squeeze the triggers to have the prop spin for about 1 second before dying. Ok, I can fix this. I look at the control board and there is NO way I can fix it. So is the problem with one of the sensors or the board. I try hooking up just the motor contact to a lamp and using the triggers, the lamp lights up for a second then goes out. OK, maybe the overheat circuit needs to be connected for it to run and I have a break in the circuit, so I short out the overheat contacts and same result. Right around the time I was soundly cursing out the control board, my darling wife reminded me that we had a dinner engagement that evening and I needed to get ready to go. It trns out that one of the items in the silent auction that night was a... So I scribbled my name down for it and gave it a good looking over. I discovered where a number of my “extra” parts went, so even if I didn’t win, it worked to my benefit. At the end of the night, after some cunning sniping, I was the proud owner of my THIRD scooter. At this point, I figured I could run my new one and the one with the new battery until I got the parts only one up and running. That weekend I connected up the new scooter full of anticipation and… Nothing. OK, deep breath, the battery is dead, that’s all… Plug it in overnight, and… Still nothing. So I am the proud owner of 1 operational scooter and 2 non-operational ones at this point. I contacted the event organizers and let them know my new toy didn’t work and got back to fixing my old one. About this time I was looking into Arduino. Having looked up a couple of instructables and watched some youtube videos, I figured Arduino would be great to build a replacement board with. My only concern was that the boards were huge and wouldn’t fit in the space of the old control board. Tiny board, perfect for my scooter. Ok so what do I need the board to do. It needs an.
