This morning we passed the Alaska pipeline on our way to Gold Dredge 8. The pipeline has helped Alaska's economy that they have no sales, property or state taxes & it funds 85% of the state's expenses, even paying something to each full time... Fairbanks gets 15-20 inches of rain a year, but less than a foot of snow because it is stopped by the Alaska range. Part of the pipeline is under ground and part above. In permafrost areas where the heat from the oil in the pipeline might cause the ground to thaw and consequently become unstable, the pipeline is insulated and elevated above ground by means of a unique support system. This system includes support pipes embedded in the ground ( called vertical support members) that sometimes contain heat pipes to remove heat and keep the ground frozen. These self contained passive refrigeration devices contain pressurized anhydrous ammonia or carbon dioxide gases which transfer ground heat to the air when the air temperature is cooler than the ground. This heat transfer process " super chills" the ground ensuring that unstable soils remain frozen year round to steadily suppport the pipeline. There are more than 124,000 heat pipes along the pipeline. Above ground sections of the pipeline are built in a zigzag configuration to allow for expansion or contraction of the pipe due to temperature changes. The zigzag configuration also allows for movement of the pipeline during an earthquake, with a greater allowance for both lateral and vertical movement at major fault lines. The Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) transports crude oil from Alaska's North Slope across 800 miles of tundra, rugged mountains and rivers to Valdez, North America's northernmost ice-free port. The pipeline traverses 3 mountain ranges, 3 major earthquake faults and more than 500 rivers and streams. The pipeline corridor includes more than 550 crossing areas for caribou, moose and other wildlife. In 1968, oil was discovered at Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope, located between the Brooks Range Mountains and the Beaufort Sea. A consortium of oil companies determined that a pipeline offered the best means to transport the crude oil to a navigatable port where it could be shipped by tankers to the continental U. S. Alyeska Pipeline Services Company was established in... The pipeline,48 inches in diameter, cost $8 billion in 1977 to build. Construction began March 27, 1975 and was completed May 31, 1977. The first oil moved through the pipeline June 20, 1977. We walked under the pipeline going to our train ride to Gold Dredge 8. On the train ride we had live music entertainment and... We were shown how to pan for gold and got a chance to try our hand at it. . Held a 19 ounce nugget worth $75,000. Enjoyed homemade cookies & coffee as we got our gold flakes placed in a charm. More enjoyable music on the return train ride. In downtown Fairbanks we had lunch at Big Daddy's Barbeque, a place where Guy Fieri visited. Lucky it was rib special Tuesday, $1/rib and they were yummy. In the afternoon we took a Riverboat Discovery Sternwheeler ride on the Chena River. This and the Gold Dredge 8 are both owned by the Binkley family and he's also in the state legislature. We made stops at a sled dog training founded be Susan Butcher & family. She won the Iditerod several years with a special runt dog, she saw potential that no one else could. We also stopped at a fish camp where we got a glimpse how the native Athabascan Indians had lived, their housing, with grass roofs, trapped and made beautiful clothes, the caribou and moose. And they caught salmon in the river and dried it for the dogs. The 5 types of Alaska salmon are : pink, silver, king, sockeye and chub. We got to sample some of that on the riverboat along with blueberry donuts. It was a beautiful evening, 70 degrees, for salads and drinks at Pike's Waterfront Restaurant along the Chena River.
